Why I built this, and why my mother’s house is still the lab.

The company started at a kitchen table in Wildwood Crest.

I spent twenty-five years as a storage engineer, most of it at one of the largest hedge funds in the world. My job was making sure the data was fast, replicated, and never lost, because on a trading floor a few seconds of downtime is measured in dollars. For most of that time it never occurred to me to point those skills at my own family.

Then I came home for Thanksgiving. My mom, Joan, told me the same story three times in one afternoon. Later that week she took Buddy, her dog, out for a walk and left the stove on. Nothing caught fire. But I drove back to Metuchen knowing something had shifted, and that a phone call every Sunday wasn’t going to catch the next one.

So I did what an infrastructure guy does. I started by putting everything under one roof: doors, lights, the thermostat, the stove. I just wanted the house to tell me what was going on. That turned out to be the easy part.

The hard part was deciding what actually mattered. It wasn’t whether the porch light was on. It was whether the stove shut itself off when she forgot. Whether she got out of bed on time. Whether anyone would know if she fell in the bathroom. And it was doing all of that without putting a camera in my mother’s house, because she’s a grown woman in her own home and she deserves to stay that way.

That last part became the rule for everything I build. No indoor cameras, ever. Her house was the first installation and it’s still the lab. If it doesn’t earn its place in Joan’s house, it doesn’t go in yours.
